The Guarding Of Newport Terminal - More Of The Untold Story

My name is Richard Allen Morawa.  I was with the 368th Transportation Company, 71st Transportation Battalion, Camp Camelot, Long Binh, Vietnam  from October 1967 to October 1968.  I was a security guard at Newport Terminal for
my entire tour of duty.

The following pictures are of security guard life at Newport Terminal from its conception,
(F-Troop) to a well-oiled, lean, mean, fighting machine, (Spit & Polish F-Troop).

There were good times and times that were not.  We made the best of a difficult situation.
I will always remember that year when my innocence was taken and my life was forever
changed.  I wouldn't trade it for anything!
Guard Tower #6

I was involved and actively participated in the "68" TET Offensive, numerous mortar/rocket attacks and small arms firefights (skirmishes) directed at the Newport Bridge and the port complex.  Sgt. James Lake
was killed in May, 68 during one of the mortar/rocket attacks on the port and bridge.
Also, there are pictures of Camp Camelot, late 67, early 68 when the Newport
Security Guards lived there before moving to Newport permanently.

This photo is also on one of Al Krabbenhoeft's pages.  Thought it was worth a second look.  This civilian Newport worker is looking at the site where James Lake was killed on the May 12, 1968 rocket attack.  She is smiling because her picture was being taken.  Look in the background. Those are broken and damaged barrels.  A close look shows
evidence of orange and white stripes.
