My name is Jim Lewis. I was with the 71st from September 68 to September 69. I initially was assigned to the 368th and worked at Newport as a port officer for a few weeks, but on 18 October was assigned to the 561st and took over as platoon leader at the railhead in Honai. On Dec 28th, all of the functions and the guys from the 561st were transferred to the 372nd which I believe had been reorganized at Long Binh / Camp Camelot after having been previously located at Cam Rahn Bay prior to Long Binh, but I am not sure of that. So the 372nd took over responsibility for the Honai Railhead, but with all the same personnel. The 372nd also took over the Newport responsibilities that had been the 561st. The railhead would receive tonnage from the ports via the Vietnamese national railroad and we would transfer the cargo onto trucks bound for the Engineer Construction Material Yard next door, but tonnage was slow, so in March 69 my platoon got the enviable job of constructing the Battalion sponsored Orphanage in Honai. SSG Frankie Wilson had a lot of construction experience so he was the NCO in charge and did a great job brobably assisted by many other guys from the platoon, including Sgt Billy Riggs, Sgt Isaac Reid, etc etc. Thus I have some pics from Newport, some from the 368th area, some from Honai railhead and the orphanage, and some from the 372nd area. |
